Mulch is the cheapest thing you can do to a property that makes an immediate visible difference. It is also the job most often done badly — piled against trunks, spread too thin to suppress anything, or dumped over weeds that were never pulled.

How often does mulch need replacing?
Most beds want a fresh top-up once a year to keep the depth doing its job of holding moisture and suppressing weeds.
Do you weed before mulching?
Yes. Weeding and edge cutting happen first. Mulch spread over weeds simply hides them for a few weeks.
Can you swap rock for mulch, or the other way round?
Yes. Removing old rock or mulch and changing a bed over is normal work, including taking the old material away.
